16:1 And Yehovah said to Samuel, How long
dost thou mourn for Saul, whereas I have rejected him from reigning over
Israel? Fill thy horn with oil, and come, I will send thee to Jessae, to
Bethleem; for I have seen among his sons a king for me.
16:2 And Samuel said, How can I go? whereas Saul will hear of it, and slay
me: and Yehovah said, Take a heifer in thine hand and thou shall say, I am
come to sacrifice to Yehovah.
16:3 And thou shalt call Jessae to the sacrifice, and I will make known to
thee what thou shalt do; and thou shalt anoint him whom I shall mention to
thee.
16:4 And Samuel did all that Yehovah told him; and he came to Bethleem: and
the elders of the city were amazed at meeting him, and said, Dost thou come
peaceably, thou Seer?
16:5 And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice to Yehovah. Sanctify
yourselves, and rejoice with me this day: and he sanctified Jessae and his
sons, and he called them to the sacrifice.
16:6 And it came to pass when they came in, that he saw Eliab, and said,
Surely Yehovah's anointed [is] before him.
16:7 But Yehovah said to Samuel, Look not on his appearance, nor on his
stature, for I have rejected him; for Elohim sees not as man looks; for man
looks at the outward appearance, but Elohim looks at the heart.
16:8 And Jessae called Aminadab, and he passed before Samuel: and he said,
Neither has Elohim chosen this one.
16:9 And Jessae caused Sama to pass by: and he said, Neither has Elohim chosen
this one.
16:10 And Jessae caused his seven sons to pass before Samuel: and Samuel
said, Yehovah has not chosen these.
16:11 And Samuel said to Jessae, Hast thou no more sons? And Jessae said,
[There is] yet a little one; behold, he tends the flock. And Samuel said to
Jessae, Send and fetch him for we may not sit down till he comes.
16:12 And he sent and fetched him: and he was ruddy, with beauty of eyes,
and very goodly to behold. And Yehovah said to Samuel, Arise, and anoint
David, for he is good.
16:13 And Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his
brethren: and the Spirit of Yehovah came upon David from that day forward:
and Samuel arose, and departed to Armathaim.
16:14 And the Spirit of Yehovah departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from
Yehovah tormented him.
16:15 And Saul's servants said to him, Behold now, and evil spirit from the
Lord torments thee.
16:16 Let now thy servants speak before thee, and let them seek for our lord
a man skilled to play on the harp; and it shall come to pass when an evil
spirit comes upon thee and he shall play on his harp, that thou shalt be
well, and he shall refresh thee.
16:17 And Saul said to his servants, Look now out for me a skillful player,
and bring him tome.
16:18 And one of his servants answered and said, Behold, I have seen a son
of Jessae the Bethleemite, and he understands playing [on the harp], and the
man [is] prudent, and a warrior, and wise in speech, and the man [is]
handsome, and Yehovah [is] with him.
16:19 And Saul sent messengers to Jessae, saying, Send to me thy son David
who is with thy flock.
16:20 And Jessae took a homer of bread, and a bottle of wine, and one kid of
the goats, and sent them by the hand of his son David to Saul.
16:21 And David went in to Saul, and stood before him; and he loved him
greatly; and he became his armour-bearer.
16:22 And Saul sent to Jessae, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before
me, for he has found grace in my eyes.
16:23 And it came to pass when the evil spirit was upon Saul, that David
took his harp, and played with his hand: and Saul was refreshed, and [it
was] well with him, and the evil spirit departed from him. |
16:1 And Yehovah said unto Samuel, How long
wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over
Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the
Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.
16:2 And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And
Yehovah said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to
Yehovah.
16:3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show thee what thou shalt
do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.
16:4 And Samuel did that which Yehovah spake, and came to Bethlehem. And
the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou
peaceably?
16:5 And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto Yehovah: sanctify
yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and
his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
16:6 And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and
said, Surely Yehovah's anointed is before him.
16:7 But Yehovah said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the
height of his stature; because I have refused him: for Yehovah seeth not as
man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but Yehovah looketh
on the heart.
16:8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he
said, Neither hath Yehovah chosen this.
16:9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath Yehovah
chosen this.
16:10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel
said unto Jesse, Yehovah hath not chosen these.
16:11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said,
There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And
Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he
come hither.
16:12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a
beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And Yehovah said, Arise,
anoint him: for this is he.
16:13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his
brethren: and the Spirit of Yehovah came upon David from that day forward.
So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
16:14 But the Spirit of Yehovah departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from
Yehovah troubled him.
16:15 And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from Elohim
troubleth thee.
16:16 Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek
out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass,
when the evil spirit from Elohim is upon thee, that he shall play with his
hand, and thou shalt be well.
16:17 And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play
well, and bring him to me.
16:18 Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son
of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant
man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the
Yehovah is with him.
16:19 Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy
son, which is with the sheep.
16:20 And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a
kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.
16:21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him
greatly; and he became his armourbearer.
16:22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before
me; for he hath found favor in my sight.
16:23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from Elohim was upon Saul, that
David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was
well, and the evil spirit departed from him. |
