13:1 In the eighteenth year of the reign of
Jeroboam Abia began to reign over Judah.
13:2 He reigned three years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name [was] Maacha,
daughter of Uriel of Gabaon. And there was war between Abia and Jeroboam.
13:3 And Abia set the battle in array with an army, with mighty men of war,
[even] four hundred thousand mighty men: and Jeroboam set the battle in
array against him with eight hundred thousand, [they were] mighty warriors
of the host.
13:4 And Abia rose up from the mount Somoron, which is in mount Ephraim, and
said, Hear ye, Jeroboam, and all Israel:
13:5 [Is it] not for you to know that Yehovah Elohim of Israel has given a
king over Israel for ever to David, and to his sons, by a covenant of salt?
13:6 But Jeroboam the [son] of Nabat, the servant of Solomon [the son] of
David, is risen up, and has revolted from his master:
13:7 and there are gathered to him pestilent men, transgressors, and he has
risen up against Roboam the [son] of Solomon, while Roboam was young and
fearful in heart, and he withstood him not.
13:8 And now ye profess to resist the kingdom of Yehovah in the hand of the
sons of David; and ye [are] a great multitude, and with you are golden
calves, which Jeroboam made you for gods.
13:9 Did ye not cast out the priests of Yehovah, the sons of Aaron, and the
Levites, and make to yourselves priests of the people of any [other] land?
whoever came to consecrate himself with a calf of the heard and seven rams,
he forthwith became a priest to that which is no god.
13:10 But we have not forsaken Yehovah our Elohim, and his priests, the sons
of Aaron, and the Levites, minister to Yehovah; and in their daily courses
13:11 they sacrifice to Yehovah whole-burnt-offering, morning and evening,
and compound incense, and [set] the shewbread on the pure table; and [there
is] the golden candlestick, and the lamps for burning, to light in the
evening: for we keep the charge of Yehovah Elohim of our fathers; but ye have
forsaken him.
13:12 And, behold, Yehovah and his priests are with us at our head, and the
signal trumpets to sound an alarm over us. Children of Israel, fight not
against Yehovah Elohim of our fathers; for ye shall not prosper.
13:13 Now Jeroboam had caused an ambush to come round upon him from behind:
and he [himself] was before Judah, and the ambush behind.
13:14 And Judah looked back, and, behold, the battle [was] against them
before and behind: and they cried to Yehovah, and the priests sounded with
the trumpets.
13:15 And the men of Judah shouted: and it came to pass, when the men of Judah
shouted, that Yehovah smote Jeroboam and Israel before Abia and Judah.
13:16 And the children of Israel fled from before Judah; and Yehovah
delivered them into their hands.
13:17 And Abia and his people smote them with a great slaughter: and there
fell slain of Israel five hundred thousand mighty men.
13:18 So the children of Israel were brought low in that day, and the
children of Judah prevailed, because they trusted on Yehovah Elohim of their
fathers.
13:19 And Abia pursued after Jeroboam, and he took from him the cities,
Baethel and her towns, and Jesyna and her towns, and Ephron and her towns.
13:20 And Jeroboam did not recover strength again all the days of Abia: and
Yehovah smote him, and he died.
13:21 But Abia strengthened himself, and took to himself fourteen wives, and
he begot twenty-two sons, and sixteen daughters.
13:22 And the rest of the acts of Abia, and his deeds, and his sayings, are
written in the book of the prophet Addo. |

Michaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. And there was war between Abijah
and Jeroboam.
13:3 And Abijah set the battle in array with an army of valiant men of war,
even four hundred thousand chosen men: Jeroboam also set the battle in array
against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men, being mighty men of
valor.
13:4 And Abijah stood up upon mount Zemaraim, which is in mount Ephraim, and
said, Hear me, thou Jeroboam, and all Israel;
13:5 Ought ye not to know that Yehovah Elohim of Israel gave the kingdom over
Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt?
13:6 Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David,
is risen up, and hath rebelled against his lord.
13:7 And there are gathered unto him vain men, the children of Belial, and
have strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when
Rehoboam was young and tenderhearted, and could not withstand them.
13:8 And now ye think to withstand the kingdom of Yehovah in the hand of
the sons of David; and ye be a great multitude, and there are with your
golden calves, which Jeroboam made you for gods.
13:9 Have ye not cast out the priests of Yehovah, the sons of Aaron, and
the Levites, and have made you priests after the manner of the nations of
other lands? so that whosoever cometh to consecrate himself with a young
bullock and seven rams, the same may be a priest of them that are no gods.
13:10 But as for us, Yehovah is our Elohim, and we have not forsaken him; and
the priests, which minister unto Yehovah, are the sons of Aaron, and the
Levites wait upon their business:
13:11 And they burn unto Yehovah every morning and every evening burnt
sacrifices and sweet incense: the shewbread also set they in order upon the
pure table; and the candlestick of gold with the lamps thereof, to burn
every evening: for we keep the charge of Yehovah our Elohim; but ye have
forsaken him.
13:12 And, behold, Elohim himself is with us for our captain, and his priests
with sounding trumpets to cry alarm against you. O children of Israel, fight
ye not against Yehovah Elohim of your fathers; for ye shall not prosper.
13:13 But Jeroboam caused an ambushment to come about behind them: so they
were before Judah, and the ambushment was behind them.
13:14 And when Judah looked back, behold, the battle was before and behind:
and they cried unto Yehovah, and the priests sounded with the trumpets.
13:15 Then the men of Judah gave a shout: and as the men of Judah shouted,
it came to pass, that Elohim smote Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and
Judah.
13:16 And the children of Israel fled before Judah: and Elohim delivered them
into their hand.
13:17 And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter: so there
fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men.
13:18 Thus the children of Israel were brought under at that time, and the
children of Judah prevailed, because they relied upon Yehovah Elohim of their
fathers.
13:19 And Abijah pursued after Jeroboam, and took cities from him, Bethel
with the towns thereof, and Jeshanah with the towns thereof, and Ephraim
with the towns thereof.
13:20 Neither did Jeroboam recover strength again in the days of Abijah: and
Yehovah struck him, and he died.
13:21 But Abijah waxed mighty, and married fourteen wives, and begat twenty
and two sons, and sixteen daughters.
13:22 And the rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways, and his sayings, are
