II Kings (II Samuel) 24

II Kings (II Samuel) 24

24:1 And Yehovah caused his anger to burn forth again in Israel, and [Satan] stirred up David against them, saying, Go, number Israel and Judah.

24:2 And the king said to Joab commander of the host, who was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israel and Judah, from Dan even to Bersabee, and number the people, and I will know the number of the people.

24:3 And Joab said to the king, Now may Yehovah add to the people a hundred-fold as many as they are, and [may] the eyes of my lord the king see it: but why does my lord the king desire this thing?

24:4 Nevertheless the word of the king prevailed against Joab an the captains of the host: And Joab and the captains of the host went out before the king to number the people of Israel.

24:5 And they went over Jordan, and encamped in Aroer, on the right of the city which is in the midst of the valley of Gad and Eliezer.

24:6 And they came to Galaad, and into the land of Thabason, which is Adasai, and they came to Danidan and Udan, and compassed Sidon.

24:7 And they came to Mapsar of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Evite and the Canaanite: and they came by the South of Judah to Bersabee.

24:8 And they compassed the whole land; and they arrived at Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.

24:9 And Joab gave in the number of the census of the people to the king: and Israel consisted of eight hundred thousand men of might that drew sword; and the men of Judah, five hundred thousand fighting men.

24:10 And the heart of David smote him after he had numbered the people; and David said to Yehovah, I have sinned grievously, O Lord, [in] what I have now done: remove, I pray thee, the iniquity of thy servant, for I have been exceedingly foolish.

24:11 And David rose early in the morning, and the word of Yehovah came to the prophet Gad, the seer, saying, Go, and speak to David, saying,

24:12 Thus saith Yehovah, I bring [one of] three things upon thee: now choose thee one of them, and I will do [it] to thee.

24:13 And Gad went in to David, and told him, and said to him, Choose [one of these things] to befall thee, whether there shall come upon thee [for] three years famine in thy land; or that thou shouldest flee three months before thine enemies, and they should pursue thee; or that there should be [for] three days mortality in thy land. Now then decide, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me.

24:14 And David said to Gad, On every side I am much straitened: let me fall now into the hands of Yehovah, for his compassions [are] very many; and let me not fall into the hands of man.

24:15 So David chose for himself the mortality: and [they were] the days of wheat-harvest; and Yehovah sent a pestilence upon Israel from morning till noon, and the plague began among the people; and there died of the people from Dan even to Bersabee seventy thousand men.

24:16 And the Messenger of Yehovah stretched out his hand against Jerusalem to destroy it, and Yehovah repented of the evil, and said to the Messenger that destroyed the people, [It is] enough now, withhold thine hand. And the Messenger of Yehovah was by the threshing-floor of Orna the Jebusite.

24:17 And David spoke to Yehovah when he saw the Messenger smiting the people, and he said, Behold, it is I that have done wrong, but these sheep what have they done? Let thy hand, I pray thee, be upon me, and upon my father's house.

24:18 And Gad came to David in that day, and said to him, Go up, and set up to Yehovah and altar in the threshing-floor of Orna the Jebusite.

24:19 And David went up according to the word of Gad, as Yehovah commanded him.

24:20 And Orna looked out, and saw the king and his servants coming on before him: and Orna went forth, and did obeisance to the king with his face to the earth.

24:21 And Orna said, Why has my lord the king come to his servant? and David said, To buy of thee the threshing-floor, in order to build an altar to the Lord that the plague may be restrained from off the people.

24:22 And Orna said to David, Let my lord the king take and offer to the Lord that which is good in his eyes: behold, [here are] oxen for a whole-burnt-offering, and the wheels and furniture of the oxen for wood.

24:23 Orna gave all to the king: and Orna said to the king, Yehovah thy Elohim bless thee.

24:24 And the king said to Orna, Nay, but I will surely buy it of thee at a fair price, and I will not offer to Yehovah my Elohim a whole-burnt-offering for nothing. So David purchased the threshing-floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

24:25 And David built there an altar to Yehovah, and offered up whole-burnt-offerings and peace-offerings: and Solomon made an addition to the altar afterwards, for it was little at first. And Yehovah hearkened to the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.

24:1 And again the anger of Yehovah was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.

24:2 For the king said to Joab the captain of the host, which was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beersheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the number of the people.

24:3 And Joab said unto the king, Now Yehovah thy Elohim add unto the people, how many soever they be, an hundredfold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing?

24:4 Notwithstanding the king's word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.

24:5 And they passed over Jordan, and pitched in Aroer, on the right side of the city that lieth in the midst of the river of Gad, and toward Jazer:

24:6 Then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtimhodshi; and they came to Danjaan, and about to Zidon,

24:7 And came to the strong hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites: and they went out to the south of Judah, even to Beersheba.

24:8 So when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.

24:9 And Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

24:10 And David's heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto Yehovah, I have sinned greatly in that I have done: and now, I beseech thee, O Yehovah, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

24:11 For when David was up in the morning, the word of Yehovah came unto the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying,

24:12 Go and say unto David, Thus saith Yehovah, I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.

24:13 So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be three days' pestilence in thy land? now advise, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me.

24:14 And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of Yehovah; for his mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of man.

24:15 So Yehovah sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba seventy thousand men.

24:16 And when the Messenger stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, Yehovah repented him of the evil, and said to the Messenger that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now thine hand. And the Messenger of Yehovah was by the threshingplace of Araunah the Jebusite.

24:17 And David spake unto Yehovah when he saw the Messenger that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly: but these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father's house.

24:18 And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto Yehovah in the threshingfloor of Araunah the Jebusite.

24:19 And David, according to the saying of Gad, went up as Yehovah commanded.

24:20 And Araunah looked, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him: and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king on his face upon the ground.

24:21 And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshingfloor of thee, to build an altar unto Yehovah, that the plague may be stayed from the people.

24:22 And Araunah said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, here be oxen for burnt sacrifice, and threshing instruments and other instruments of the oxen for wood.

24:23 All these things did Araunah, as a king, give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the king, Yehovah thy Elohim accept thee.

24:24 And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto Yehovah my Elohim of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

24:25 And David built there an altar unto Yehovah, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So Yehovah was intreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
