9:1 Hear, O Israel: Thou goest this day
across Jordan to inherit nations greater and stronger than yourselves,
cities great and walled up to heaven;
9:2 a people great and many and tall, the sons of Enac, whom thou knowest,
and concerning whom thou hast heard [say], Who can stand before the children
of Enac?
9:3 And thou shalt know to-day, that Yehovah thy Elohim he shall go before thy
face: he is a consuming fire; he shall destroy them, and he shall turn them
back before thee, and shall destroy them quickly, as Yehovah said to thee.
9:4 Speak not in thine heart, when Yehovah thy Elohim has destroyed these
nations before thy face, saying, For my righteousness Yehovah brought me in
to inherit this good land.
9:5 Not for thy righteousness, nor for the holiness of thy heart, dost thou
go in to inherit their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations
Yehovah will destroy them from before thee, and that he may establish the
covenant, which Yehovah sware to our fathers, to Abraam, and to Isaac, and
to Jacob.
9:6 And thou shalt know to-day, that [it is] not for thy righteousnesses the
Lord thy Elohim gives thee this good land to inherit, or thou art a
stiff-necked people.
9:7 Remember, forget not, how much thou provokedst Yehovah thy Elohim in the
wilderness: from the day that ye came forth out of Egypt, even till ye came
into this place, ye continued to be disobedient toward Yehovah.
9:8 Also in Choreb ye provoked Yehovah, and Yehovah was angry with you to
destroy you;
9:9 when I went up into the mountain to receive the tables of stone, the
tables of the covenant, which Yehovah made with you, and I was in the
mountain forty days and forty nights, I ate no bread and drank no water.
9:10 And Yehovah gave me the two tables of stone written with the finger of
Elohim, and on them there had been written all the words which Yehovah spoke
to you in the mountain in the day of the assembly.
9:11 And it came to pass after forty days and forty nights, Yehovah gave me
the two tables of stone, the tables of the covenant.
9:12 And Yehovah said to me, Arise, go down quickly from hence, for thy
people whom thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt have transgressed; they
have gone aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them, and have made
themselves a molten image.
9:13 And Yehovah spoke to me, saying, I have spoken to thee once and again,
saying, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiff-necked people.
9:14 And now suffer me utterly to destroy them, and I will blot out their
name from under heaven, and will make of thee a nation great and strong, and
more numerous than this.
9:15 And I turned and went down from the mountain; and the mountain burned
with fire to heaven; and the two tables of the testimonies [were] in my two
hands.
9:16 And when I saw that ye had sinned against Yehovah your Elohim, and had
made to yourselves a molten image, and had gone astray out of the way, which
Yehovah commanded you to keep;
9:17 then I took hold of the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands,
and broke them before you.
9:18 And I made my petition before Yehovah as also at the first forty days
and forty nights: I ate no bread and drank no water, n account of all your
sins which ye sinned in doing evil before Yehovah Elohim to provoke him.
9:19 And I was greatly terrified because of the wrath and anger, because the
Lord was provoked with you utterly to destroy you; yet Yehovah hearkened to
me at this time also.
9:20 And he was angry with Aaron to destroy him utterly, and I prayed for
Aaron also at that time.
9:21 And your sin which ye had made, [even] the calf, I took, and burnt it
with fire, and pounded it and ground it down till it became fine; and it
became like dust, and I cast the dust into the brook that descended from the
mountain.
9:22 Also in the burning, and in the temptation, and at the graves of lust,
ye provoked Yehovah.
9:23 And when Yehovah sent you forth from Cades Barne, saying, Go up and
inherit the land which I give to you, then ye disobeyed the word of Yehovah
your Elohim, and believed him not, and hearkened not to his voice.
9:24 Ye were disobedient in the things relating to Yehovah from the day in
which he became known to you.
9:25 And I prayed before Yehovah forty days and forty nights, the number
that I prayed [before], for Yehovah said that he would utterly destroy you.
9:26 And I prayed to Elohim, and said, O Lord, King of gods, destroy not thy
people and thine inheritance, whom thou didst redeem, whom thou broughtest
out of the land of Egypt with thy great power, and with thy strong hand, and
with thy high arm.
9:27 Remember Abraam, and Isaac, and Jacob thy servants, to whom thou
swarest by thyself: look not upon the hardness of heart of this people, and
their impieties, and their sins.
9:28 Lest the inhabitants of the land whence thou broughtest us out speak,
saying, Because Yehovah could not bring them into the land of which he
spoke to them, and because he hated them, has he brought them forth to slay
them in the wilderness.
9:29 And these [are] thy people and thy portion, whom thou broughtest out of
the land of Egypt with thy great strength, and with thy mighty hand, and
with thy high arm. |
9:1 Hear, O Israel: Thou art to pass over
Jordan this day, to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than
thyself, cities great and fenced up to heaven,
9:2 A people great and tall, the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest,
and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand before the children of Anak!
9:3 Understand therefore this day, that Yehovah thy Elohim is he which goeth
over before thee; as a consuming fire he shall destroy them, and he shall
bring them down before thy face: so shalt thou drive them out, and destroy
them quickly, as Yehovah hath said unto thee.
9:4 Speak not thou in thine heart, after that Yehovah thy Elohim hath cast
them out from before thee, saying, For my righteousness Yehovah hath
brought me in to possess this land: but for the wickedness of these nations
Yehovah doth drive them out from before thee.
9:5 Not for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thine heart, dost
thou go to possess their land: but for the wickedness of these nations the
Yehovah thy Elohim doth drive them out from before thee, and that he may perform
the word which Yehovah sware unto thy fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
9:6 Understand therefore, that Yehovah thy Elohim giveth thee not this good
land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiffnecked people.
9:7 Remember, and forget not, how thou provokedst Yehovah thy Elohim to wrath
in the wilderness: from the day that thou didst depart out of the land of
Egypt, until ye came unto this place, ye have been rebellious against the
Yehovah.
9:8 Also in Horeb ye provoked Yehovah to wrath, so that Yehovah was angry
with you to have destroyed you.
9:9 When I was gone up into the mount to receive the tables of stone, even
the tables of the covenant which Yehovah made with you, then I abode in the
mount forty days and forty nights, I neither did eat bread nor drink water:
9:10 And Yehovah delivered unto me two tables of stone written with the
finger of Elohim; and on them was written according to all the words, which the
Yehovah spake with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of
the assembly.
9:11 And it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights, that the
Yehovah gave me the two tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant.
9:12 And Yehovah said unto me, Arise, get thee down quickly from hence; for
thy people which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt have corrupted
themselves; they are quickly turned aside out of the way which I commanded
them; they have made them a molten image.
9:13 Furthermore Yehovah spake unto me, saying, I have seen this people,
and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:
9:14 Let me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from
under heaven: and I will make of thee a nation mightier and greater than
they.
9:15 So I turned and came down from the mount, and the mount burned with
fire: and the two tables of the covenant were in my two hands.
9:16 And I looked, and, behold, ye had sinned against Yehovah your Elohim, and
had made you a molten calf: ye had turned aside quickly out of the way which
Yehovah had commanded you.
9:17 And I took the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands, and brake
them before your eyes.
9:18 And I fell down before Yehovah, as at the first, forty days and forty
nights: I did neither eat bread, nor drink water, because of all your sins
which ye sinned, in doing wickedly in the sight of Yehovah, to provoke him
to anger.
9:19 For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure, wherewith Yehovah
was wroth against you to destroy you. But Yehovah hearkened unto me at that
time also.
9:20 And Yehovah was very angry with Aaron to have destroyed him: and I
prayed for Aaron also the same time.
9:21 And I took your sin, the calf which ye had made, and burnt it with
fire, and stamped it, and ground it very small, even until it was as small
as dust: and I cast the dust thereof into the brook that descended out of
the mount.
9:22 And at Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibrothhattaavah, ye provoked the
Yehovah to wrath.
9:23 Likewise when Yehovah sent you from Kadeshbarnea, saying, Go up and
possess the land which I have given you; then ye rebelled against the
commandment of Yehovah your Elohim, and ye believed him not, nor hearkened to
his voice.
9:24 Ye have been rebellious against Yehovah from the day that I knew you.
9:25 Thus I fell down before Yehovah forty days and forty nights, as I fell
down at the first; because Yehovah had said he would destroy you.
9:26 I prayed therefore unto Yehovah, and said, O Lord GOD, destroy not thy
people and thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed through thy
greatness, which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand.
9:27 Remember thy servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; look not unto the
stubbornness of this people, nor to their wickedness, nor to their sin:
9:28 Lest the land whence thou broughtest us out say, Because Yehovah was
not able to bring them into the land which he promised them, and because he
hated them, he hath brought them out to slay them in the wilderness.
9:29 Yet they are thy people and thine inheritance, which thou broughtest
out by thy mighty power and by thy stretched out arm. |
