Zacharias (Zechariah) 1

Zacharias (Zechariah) 1

1:1 In the eighth month, in the second year of [the reign of] Darius, the word of Yehovah came to Zacharias, the son of Barachias, the son of Addo, the prophet, saying,

1:2 Yehovah has been very angry with your fathers.

1:3 And thou shalt say to them, Thus saith Yehovah Almighty: Turn to me, saith Yehovah of hosts, and I will turn to you, saith Yehovah of hosts.

1:4 And be ye not as your fathers, whom the prophets before charged, saying, Thus saith Yehovah Almighty: Turn ye from your evil ways, and from your evil practices: but they hearkened not, and attended not to hearken to me, saith Yehovah.

1:5 Where are your fathers, and the prophets? Will they live for ever?

1:6 But do ye receive my words and mine ordinances, all that I command by my Spirit to my servants the prophets, who lived in the days of your fathers; and they answered and said, As Yehovah Almighty determined to do to us, according to our ways, and according to our practices, so has he done to us.

1:7 On the twenty-fourth [day] in the eleventh month, this is the month Sabat, in the second year of [the reign of] Darius, the word of Yehovah came to Zacharias, the son of Barachias, the son of Addo, the prophet, saying,

1:8 I saw by night, and behold a man mounted on a red horse, and he stood between the shady mountains; and behind him were red horses, and grey, and piebald, and white.

1:9 And I said, What are these, [my] lord? And the Messenger spoke with me said to me, I will shew thee what these [things] are.

1:10 And the man that stood between the mountains answered, and said to me, These are [they] whom Yehovah has sent forth to go round the earth.

1:11 And they answered the Messenger of Yehovah that stood between the mountains, and said, We have gone round all the earth, and, behold, all the earth is inhabited, and is at rest.

1:12 Then the Messenger of Yehovah answered and said, O Yehovah Almighty, how long wilt thou have no mercy on Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, which thou has disregarded these seventy years?

1:13 And Yehovah Almighty answered the Messenger that spoke with me good words and consolatory sayings.

1:14 And the Messenger that spoke with me said to me, Cry out and say, Thus saith Yehovah Almighty; I have been jealous for Jerusalem and Zion with great jealousy.

1:15 And I am very angry with the heathen that combine to attack [her]: forasmuch as I indeed was a little angry, but they combined to attack [her] for evil.

1:16 Therefore thus saith Yehovah: I will return to Jerusalem with compassion; and my house shall be rebuilt in her, saith Yehovah Almighty, and a measuring line shall yet be stretched out over Jerusalem.

1:17 And the Messenger that spoke with me said to me, Cry yet, and say, Thus saith Yehovah Almighty; Yet shall cities be spread abroad through prosperity; and Yehovah shall yet have mercy upon Zion, and shall choose Jerusalem.

1:18 And I lifted up mine eyes and looked, and behold four horns.

1:19 And I said to the Messenger that spoke with me, What are these things, [my] lord? And he said to me, These are the horns that have scattered Judah, and Israel, and Jerusalem.

1:20 And Yehovah shewed me four artificers.

1:21 And I said, What are these coming to do? And he said, These are the horns that scattered Judah, and they broke Israel in pieces, and none of them lifted up his head: and these are come forth to sharpen them for their hands, [even] the four horns, the nations that lifted up the horn against the land of Yehovah to scatter it.

1:1 In the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of Yehovah unto Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet, saying,

1:2 Yehovah hath been sore displeased with your fathers.

1:3 Therefore say thou unto them, Thus saith Yehovah of hosts; Turn ye unto me, saith Yehovah of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith Yehovah of hosts.

1:4 Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets have cried, saying, Thus saith Yehovah of hosts; Turn ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings: but they did not hear, nor hearken unto me, saith Yehovah.

1:5 Your fathers, where are they? and the prophets, do they live for ever?

1:6 But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not take hold of your fathers? and they returned and said, Like as Yehovah of hosts thought to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath he dealt with us.

1:7 Upon the four and twentieth day of the eleventh month, which is the month Sebat, in the second year of Darius, came the word of Yehovah unto Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet, saying,

1:8 I saw by night, and behold a man riding upon a red horse, and he stood among the myrtle trees that were in the bottom; and behind him were there red horses, speckled, and white.

1:9 Then said I, O my lord, what are these? And the Messenger that talked with me said unto me, I will shew thee what these be.

1:10 And the man that stood among the myrtle trees answered and said, These are they whom Yehovah hath sent to walk to and fro through the earth.

1:11 And they answered the Messenger of Yehovah that stood among the myrtle trees, and said, We have walked to and fro through the earth, and, behold, all the earth sitteth still, and is at rest.

1:12 Then the Messenger of Yehovah answered and said, O Yehovah of hosts, how long wilt thou not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which thou hast had indignation these threescore and ten years?

1:13 And Yehovah answered the Messenger that talked with me with good words and comfortable words.

1:14 So the Messenger that communed with me said unto me, Cry thou, saying, Thus saith Yehovah of hosts; I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy.

1:15 And I am very sore displeased with the heathen that are at ease: for I was but a little displeased, and they helped forward the affliction.

1:16 Therefore thus saith Yehovah; I am returned to Jerusalem with mercies: my house shall be built in it, saith Yehovah of hosts, and a line shall be stretched forth upon Jerusalem.

1:17 Cry yet, saying, Thus saith Yehovah of hosts; My cities through prosperity shall yet be spread abroad; and Yehovah shall yet comfort Zion, and shall yet choose Jerusalem.

1:18 Then lifted I up mine eyes, and saw, and behold four horns.

1:19 And I said unto the Messenger that talked with me, What be these? And he answered me, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.

1:20 And Yehovah shewed me four carpenters.

1:21 Then said I, What come these to do? And he spake, saying, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, so that no man did lift up his head: but these are come to fray them, to cast out the horns of the Gentiles, which lifted up their horn over the land of Judah to scatter it.
